Record Review
I carry out a comprehensive and independent review of dental records. This includes clinical notes, radiographs, treatment plans, consent documentation, and correspondence.
I assess the standard of care against accepted clinical guidelines and professional practice. In particular, I examine diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical execution, maintenance, and the management of complications such as peri-implant disease.
As a result, I identify omissions, inconsistencies, and deviations. I then present my findings in a structured, clear, and evidence-based format to support legal analysis and report preparation.
Breach of Duty
I assess whether the care provided met the standard expected of a reasonably competent practitioner in Periodontology and Implantology.
First, I analyse diagnosis, treatment planning, consent, surgical execution, and post-operative care. I then compare these findings with established guidelines and accepted professional practice at the time of treatment.
Where standards fall short, I identify and evaluate these departures. Consequently, I provide clear, objective, and well-reasoned opinions, always aligned with my overriding duty to the court.
Causation
I evaluate whether any identified breach of duty caused or materially contributed to the patient’s alleged harm.
To do so, I analyse the clinical sequence of events, the baseline condition, and the likely natural progression without the alleged breach. In addition, I consider the “but for” test, material contribution, and alternative explanations such as pre-existing conditions, patient-related factors, and inherent treatment risks.
Therefore, I distinguish clearly between correlation and causation. I provide balanced, evidence-based conclusions to assist the court.
Condition and Prognosis
I assess the patient’s current clinical condition and expected future course. I base this on a detailed review of records and clinical findings.
Furthermore, I evaluate ongoing pathology, functional impact, and the stability of periodontal and peri-implant tissues. I also consider disease progression, the need for further treatment, and expected outcomes with and without intervention.
As a result, I provide clear, objective, and evidence-based conclusions to assist the court in understanding both present status and future implications.
Expert Reports
I prepare reports in full compliance with CPR Part 35. This ensures clarity, transparency, and adherence to the duties of an independent expert.
Each report follows a clear and logical structure. I address breach of duty, causation, condition, and prognosis, supported by clinical records, radiographs, and current professional standards.
Moreover, I write reports in a clear and accessible style for legal professionals while maintaining clinical accuracy. I maintain independence and objectivity at all times.
Legal support
I attend case conferences and joint expert discussions when required. During these meetings, I explain clinical opinions clearly to legal teams.
In addition, I respond to supplementary questions and clarify complex periodontal and implant-related issues. I also attend court when necessary to give oral evidence.
Throughout, I present my opinions clearly, consistently, and impartially under cross-examination. I ensure that all input remains aligned with my written report and my overriding duty to the court.
